I agree with many of the points you make, and I certainly have my 'model' for managing deployment in SharePoint. It's about much more than this, but a key part is the Content Deployment Wizard I wrote (<a href="http://www.codeplex.com/SPDeploymentWizard" rel="nofollow">www.codeplex.com/SPDeploymentWizard</a>) - I intend to go into detail about my approach soon.
