SharePoint 2013 Search contains rich capabilities that help you find the relevant content. What if however you already know what you are looking for and just want to get a link to it?
At the upcoming SharePoint Connect 2014 I will be speaking on building SharePoint 2013 portals and public-facing websites using the Single Page App approach.
When working with catalogs and cross-site publishing SharePoint 2013 automatically rewrites links between catalog items so that those links work wherever the catalog is published.
If you try to hide Navigation Terms pinned from a catalog in the navigation, URL rewriting for catalog items will break and you will see the physical URLs of those items instead.
On your public-facing website consider enabling the anonymous search REST API to publish your content to other channels such as topic sites and mobile apps.
