#7 The first impression

What’s the first impression of the thing you’re building? Is it simple to use? Does it require prereading? Does it have a walkthrough or a wizard? Is the next step obvious?

When you’re an expert in your field, you live in a bubble. You don’t know how it is to not know, to not get it, to never have used something. You make assumptions, even if unconsciously, that people know something. I mean, they should, right? Everyone does!

There are more novices than experts in every field. Unlike you, the majority of people don’t live and breathe your space. They have a problem they need to solve, a task to complete, and move on with their job. And the easier you can make it for them, the more they will love whatever you have to offer.

You have only one shot at making the first impression. Will you empower your users or confuse them and make them feel stupid?
